GUEST TEACHER TRAINING PROGRAM

The Berks County Intermediate Unit 14 is offering Guest Teacher Training for individuals with a bachelor's degree (in any content area) who are interested in serving as substitute teachers. The training program will enable participants to substitute in BCIU classes as well as classes within 17 participating school entities in Berks County.

The Guest Teacher Program is offered twice a year at the Berks County Intermediate Unit, 1111 Commons Boulevard, Reading, PA 19605 - directions

Fall 2013 (Deadline for fall applications is July 31, 2013)

  • Interviews: Wednesday, August 7, 2013
    Training dates & times:
    Tuesday, September 24 and Wednesday, September 25, 2013
    7:30 a.m. - 8:00 a.m. - Sign in and registration (continental breakfast provided - Day 1 only)
    8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. - Program (lunch provided)

Spring 2014  (Deadline for fall applications is November 20, 2013)

  • Interviews: Wednesday, December 4, 2013
    Training dates & times:
    Wednesday, January 22 and Thursday, January 23, 2014
    7:30 a.m. - 8:00 a.m. - Sign in and registration (continental breakfast provided - Day 1 only)
    8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. - Program (lunch provided)
  • Snow dates: January 29 and January 30, 2014

During these training sessions, you will learn about classroom management techniques, lesson plans, special education, development & behavior of age groups, and how to deal with today’s students.  You will also have the opportunity to meet current guest teachers, observe classrooms, and learn more about the process and program.  Upon completion of the two-day training session and all the required paperwork, Berks County Intermediate Unit will apply for your emergency permit through the Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE).  Once you are approved by PDE, you are then eligible to substitute in any subject for the academic school year in the following participating school entities:

Antietam - Boyertown Area - Brandywine Heights Area - Conrad Weiser Area - Exeter Township - Fleetwood Area - Hamburg Area - Kutztown Area - Muhlenberg - Oley Valley - Schuylkill Valley - Tulpehocken Area - Twin Valley - Wilson - Wyomissing - Berks County Career & Technology Center - Berks County Intermediate Unit

Please note that the emergency permit sponsored by the Berks County Intermediate Unit qualifies you to be a substitute in short-term assignments only at the school entities listed above.

NEW APPLICANTS

In order to register for the training, the following paperwork must be submitted by July 31, 2013 for fall 2013, or November 20, 2013 for spring 2014:

Upon successful completion of the interview and registration process, the following paperwork is required two weeks before Day 1 of the training session:

RENEWAL PROCESS

Your day-to day substitute emergency permit for the Guest Teacher Program is valid for one school year. All permits end on July 31, regardless of the date of issuance. In order to continue to serve as a substitute in the 2013-2014 school year, you must renew your emergency permit.

Your emergency permit can be renewed by completing the PDE 338 G Form. Section II, Question #2 (referring to the Subject Areas) can be left blank. Section III-Health Certificate can also be left blank.

PDE 338 G Forms are also available at the Front Desk of the BCIU Main Headquarters located at 1111 Commons Blvd.

Remit your PDE 338 G Form (both sides of the form need to be completed) as well as a $5 money order (please note your full name and address on the money order) payable to BCIU to:

Renewals will be processed monthly. However to ensure your emergency permit is approved by the beginning of 2013-2014 academic year, your $5 money order and PDE 338 G Form must be received by June 21, 2013.

Once your permit is approved we will supply your information to the school districts. You can check the status of your permit on the TIMS website.
