OFFICE OF professional development & curriculum

The Office of Professional Development and Curriculum directs and coordinates all professional development activities for early childhood and school personnel. The predominate focus is curriculum, instruction, assessment, and the use of data.

Dr. Bonita Troxell serves as the director of the Office of Professional Development and Curriculum.  She began her career in education as an English teacher and reading specialist in districts in Northern York and Northumberland Counties. A full-time position at Susquehanna University gave her the opportunity to teach courses in children’s literature and reading instruction and to coordinate the Pennsylvania Alternative Certification program, where she set up a tracking program for the state records at the University. In 1993, she began her work in curriculum administration and served at both Selinsgrove Area School District and Central Columbia School District. She joined the Berks County Intermediate Unit team in 2006.

Dr. Troxell earned her Ed.D. in curriculum and teaching at Teachers College, Columbia University. She received her Master of Education and Reading Specialist certification at Kutztown University and her principal certificates and superintendent’s letter of eligibility at Bucknell University. She completed her B.A. in English at Messiah College. Currently, Dr. Troxell is the president of the Eastern Region of the Pennsylvania Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development. She also serves as a member of the Governor’s Council on Early Learning.

Dr. Cynthia S. Mierzejewski serves as the assistant director of Professional Development and Curriculum. After teaching chemistry and science at several Berks County schools, she served as assistant principal for Fleetwood Area High School for four years and as principal at Tulpehocken Junior/Senior High School for one year. Dr. Mierzejewski started at the BCIU in 2004 as a program administrator of the Curriculum, Staff Development, and Related Services Division. In 2009, she became assistant director for the Office of Professional Development and Curriculum.

Dr. Mierzejewski earned her Ed.D. in educational leadership from Immaculata University in 2010. She received a Master of Education degree from the Pennsylvania State University and holds a B.S. in chemistry, as well as her Pennsylvania teaching certificate from Alvernia College. Dr. Mierzejewski also holds a K-12 principal’s certificate and a superintendent’s letter of eligibility. She is the co-chair of the Curriculum Committee for the PA Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development and is the co-chair for the Pennsylvania Intermediate Units Curriculum Coordinators’ group.
